How Sapphic Journeys would change the way lesbian and queer women travel

Travel has always been about discovering somewhere new. A different city, a different culture, a different landscape, a different way of seeing the world. But for many lesbian and queer women, the question is increasingly becoming something else too: Who might I safely meet when I get there ? Because choosing a destination isn't only about finding somewhere beautiful, exciting or interesting. It can also be about finding somewhere you feel welcomed, safe and comfortable being yourself, somewhere you can connect with other women, and you might discover a community, even if you are only there for a few days.

This is where the concept of sapphic travel comes in. It is a way of thinking about travel that puts lesbian and queer women's experiences, connections and communities more firmly into the picture. Because sometimes, the best part of travelling somewhere new isn't simply the destination. It's discovering your people when you get there.

What is sapphic travel ?

“Sapphic” is increasingly being used as an inclusive term for women who are attracted to women, including lesbians and queer women. But sapphic travel is about more than simply putting the word “women” into an LGBTQ+ travel guide. It recognises that lesbian and queer women can have their own travel experiences, interests, communities and ways of connecting.

For some women, that might mean travelling to a Pride event. For others, it could be a women-centred festival, a cultural trip, a city break, a beach holiday or simply exploring somewhere they've always wanted to visit. It might mean travelling alone and loving every minute of the independence. Or it might mean travelling alone while secretly hoping there will be someone to have coffee with, explore a new neighbourhood with, go to an event with or simply sit and talk to at the end of the day.

There is no single way to travel. And there is certainly no single way to connect. Choosing a destination is only the beginning. And, when you're looking for an LGBTQ+ friendly destination, the practical questions still matter. What are the local attitudes and laws ? Are there LGBTQ+ communities and welcoming spaces ? Are there Pride events, festivals or women-centred events taking place ? Are the accommodation, restaurants, cafés, tours and other experiences somewhere you will feel comfortable ? What do other travellers say about the destination ?

Those checks can make a huge difference. But there is another question worth asking: What kind of experience do I actually want to have there? Perhaps you want a lively city with plenty happening. Perhaps you'd rather spend your days wandering through museums, sitting in cafés, having long lunches and discovering places that aren't in every guidebook. Or maybe you're travelling for Pride, maybe you're going to a women’s festival, maybe you're looking for a quiet escape while you are travelling alone. Or just maybe you're travelling alone because you haven't yet found the right person to travel with.

That last distinction matters. The solo travel paradox. Because there is a strange little contradiction at the heart of modern travel. You can love travelling alone without necessarily wanting to feel alone. You can enjoy deciding your own itinerary, waking up when you want, wandering wherever you fancy and having complete freedom over your day. But that doesn't mean you don't sometimes want someone to share an experience with. Because, for mature lesbian and queer women, finding those connections while travelling can sometimes be surprisingly difficult.

Travel websites can tell you where to stay, tourist guides can tell you what to see, events websites can tell you what is happening, dating apps can help you meet people, social media can create groups, but none of these necessarily answer one very simple travel question: Who else is going where I'm going ? What if you knew who was there before you arrived ?

Imagine you're travelling to Brighton for the weekend, or Barcelona, or Lisbon, Paris or Lesbos. You know where you're staying, you've looked at the restaurants, you've checked the things you want to see, maybe you've even booked a few events. But then you wonder: Are there other lesbian or queer women travelling there at the same time ? Is anyone else going to the same event ? Could I meet someone who shares my interests ? Could I find a travel companion ? Could I connect with a local woman who knows the city ? And most importantly: Could I make a new friend before I've even arrived ?

That is the space between travel and connection, that Sapphic Journeys was created to explore. This is where the Sapphic Journeys app comes in. Sapphic Journeys is a travel-first connection app and community travelling platform for lesbian and queer women, designed around the way women actually travel, connect and experience destinations.

Instead of creating another platform where the main question is simply: Who do I want to date ? Sapphic Journeys starts with a different question: Where are you going, what are you doing there, and who else might be part of your journey ? The app brings travel and connection together, allowing women to discover potential connections around destinations, travel plans, interests, events and shared experiences. It is designed to help women connect before they travel, while they are travelling and when they arrive, so that a journey doesn't have to begin with arriving somewhere completely alone and hoping to meet someone by chance.

The idea behind the app is simple: your destination can become the starting point for connection. You might be travelling somewhere for a weekend, heading to a Pride, attending a festival, planning a city break, looking for a travel companion, or simply wanting to know whether other sapphic women will be nearby. Sapphic Journeys is designed to make those possibilities easier to discover and to find your people while travelling, because connection can completely change the experience of a destination.

A trip can become more memorable because of the woman you met for coffee, a festival can feel different when you arrive already knowing someone, a Pride weekend can become more enjoyable when you have people to share it with, a new city can feel less unfamiliar when someone local recommends the place they actually love rather than the place that appears on every tourist website. Sometimes a connection doesn't need to become a lifelong friendship, a relationship or anything particularly complicated. It can simply be: We were both there. We had something in common. We had a great afternoon together. And that is still meaningful.

The Sapphic Journeys app is built around creating more opportunities for those moments to happen, rather than leaving connection entirely to chance, so women can use the platform to discover other women who may be travelling to the same destination, attending the same event, looking for similar experiences or simply interested in connecting. Travel-first, not dating-first, that is the core of the app. This is one of the ideas that makes Sapphic Journeys different. The platform isn't built around the assumption that every connection between two women needs to become romantic. But still, who knows what can happen when the Travel Chemistry is right ?

Sapphic Journeys is designed to make those kinds of connections possible. At the heart of Sapphic Journeys is the concept of Travel Chemistry. We all know what chemistry between people can feel like. It can be friendship, connection, same vibes, shared humour, similar interests, the feeling that conversation comes easily, and it doesn't have to be romantic. Because sometimes that chemistry can begin with something as simple as discovering that you are both going to the same place, at the same time.

Travel Chemistry is about helping women discover potential connections through common things such as destinations, travel plans, interests, and experiences. Instead of arriving somewhere and simply hoping you happen to meet the right people, the idea is to create opportunities for meaningful connection before or during the journey. Because compatibility doesn't always begin with a photograph or a swipe, sometimes it begins with: You're going there too ?

And that's the idea behind Travel Chemistry: creating the opportunity to discover that connection, before the moment has already passed. Whether the connection becomes a friendship, a travel partnership, a shared experience, a local introduction, a romantic connection or simply a memorable afternoon, the starting point can be the journey itself. Different women, different journeys and sapphic travel doesn't have to mean the same thing to everyone.

For the solo traveller, it might mean having independence while still knowing there are people nearby to connect with. For the Pride traveller, it might mean finding other women attending the same event, or it could mean connecting with women before arriving. For the woman exploring a new city, it might mean finding a local connection or someone to discover the city with. For someone looking for friendship, it can offer an alternative to a dating-focused environment. For someone looking for a travel companion, it can mean finding somebody whose interests and travel style actually fit. And for a woman who simply wants to know that there are other sapphic women nearby, that connection can make an unfamiliar destination feel a little more welcoming.

This is why Sapphic Journeys is not based on the idea that every woman wants the same thing. Your journey is yours, your reasons for travelling are yours, and the kind of connection you are looking for is yours too. The app is designed to give women the opportunity to communicate that freely. Travelling is more than a destination, and perhaps this is where the idea of sapphic travel becomes most interesting. We often talk about travel in terms of destinations, but a destination is only one part of a journey. The other part is what happens before you arrive and while you're there. The people you meet, the conversations you have, the meals you share, the places someone local recommends, the spontaneous afternoon that wasn't in your itinerary, the coffee that turns into lunch, the friendship that continues long after you both return home. Those are the things that turn a trip into a memory. And this is exactly why Sapphic Journeys was created: to bring the people and the destination together.

A different way to think about travel - Sapphic Journeys starts with a simple idea: You shouldn't have to choose between travelling independently and finding meaningful connection. Travel can be both. You can have your freedom and still find your people; you can explore somewhere new and still feel connected; you can arrive somewhere you've never been before and discover that you're not quite as alone as you thought. Because the future of sapphic travel isn't only about finding LGBTQ+-friendly destinations. It's about finding connection within those destinations; it's about community and shared experiences. It's about discovering women who might become friends, travel companions, local guides, festival buddies, or simply someone you are glad you met along the way.

And perhaps, ultimately, it's about something even simpler: Finding a place where you feel like you belong and finding the right people who make it feel that way. Travel. Connect. Belong. – it is our motto and our vision. Sapphic Journeys is all about building a travel-first community platform for lesbian and queer women who want to discover new places, share experiences and connect with women who have something in common. The app just brings together travel, connection and community in one dedicated space, giving women a new way to discover who else is travelling, what people are looking for and where opportunities for connection might exist. Because sometimes the most exciting question isn't: Where are you going ? It's: Who else might I meet up with once I am there ?

Discover your Travel Chemistry. Start your journey of belonging.
