LGBTQ+ Scene
Sitges is a small, glamorous coastal town 35 kilometres south of Barcelona — often called the lesbian capital of Spain. With golden beaches, a charming old town, and an atmosphere of joyful freedom, Sitges punches far above its weight as a queer destination. It's intimate, beautiful, and utterly welcoming.
Outstanding. Sitges is one of Europe's most LGBTQ+-friendly towns, with a scene concentrated around the beach and the streets behind it. Sitges Pride is a major event, and the carnival in February is world-famous. The entire town has a relaxed, accepting atmosphere throughout the year.
Five experiences not to miss
1. Playa de la Ribera — the main beach, lively and social with great LGBTQ+ presence. 2. Old Town — beautiful baroque church, narrow streets, and excellent restaurants. 3. Museu Cau Ferrat — Santiago Rusiñol's extraordinary home and studio. 4. Sitges Carnival — one of the most famous and colourful in Spain (February). 5. Sitges Pride — a major LGBTQ+ celebration each June.
Travel Tips
Sitges is easily reachable from Barcelona by RENFE commuter train (40 minutes, very cheap). The town is small enough to explore entirely on foot. Summer weekends are extremely busy — consider visiting midweek for a quieter experience. The restaurants on the seafront promenade are lovely but pricey; better value is found a few streets back.
