Lisbon

LGBTQ+ Scene

Lisbon is one of Europe's most charming and affordable capital cities — a place of cobbled hills, vintage trams, soulful fado music, and extraordinary food. Increasingly popular with queer travellers, the city has a warm, easy-going energy that makes it immediately welcoming to all.

Good and growing. The Príncipe Real neighbourhood is the epicentre of Lisbon's LGBTQ+ life, with a cluster of queer-friendly bars and restaurants. Lisbon Pride takes place in late June. The city is broadly accepting — same-sex marriage has been legal in Portugal since 2010.

Five experiences not to miss

1. Alfama neighbourhood — the oldest part of the city, full of fado bars and viewpoints. 2. Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery — Lisbon's iconic riverside landmarks. 3. LX Factory — a converted industrial space with markets, restaurants, and galleries. 4. Tram 28 — the famous historic tram route through the city's oldest neighbourhoods. 5. Time Out Market — a celebrated food hall showcasing Portugal's best chefs.

Travel Tips

Lisbon is hilly — wear comfortable shoes! The 28 tram is very crowded in tourist season; try taking it early morning for the same experience without the crush. Pastéis de Belém (custard tarts) from the original bakery in Belém are not to be missed. Uber is cheap and reliable throughout the city.
