LGBTQ+ Scene
Amsterdam is one of the world's most LGBTQ+-friendly cities — a place of beautiful canals, world-class museums, cycling culture, and extraordinary open-mindedness. The city has been a beacon of queer liberation for decades, and its annual Pride canal parade is one of the most spectacular events on earth.
Exceptional. Amsterdam has one of the world's most established LGBTQ+ scenes, centred around Reguliersdwarsstraat and the Warmoesstraat. The canal Pride parade in August is unmissable. The city is broadly progressive — same-sex marriage was first legalised here in 2001.
Five experiences not to miss
1. Canal cruise — the best way to see the city and understand its layout. 2. Rijksmuseum — one of the world's great art museums, home to Rembrandt and Vermeer. 3. Anne Frank House — deeply moving and essential; book weeks in advance. 4. Vondelpark — the city's beloved green heart, perfect for picnics and people-watching. 5. Reguliersdwarsstraat — the main LGBTQ+ street, lined with bars and cafés.
Travel Tips
Cycling is the best way to get around — rent a bike on day one and embrace it. Amsterdam Pride in late July/August is spectacular but the city is very busy; book accommodation far in advance. The OV-chipkaart (transit card) works across tram, metro, and bus. The I Amsterdam City Card gives free museum entry and unlimited transit.
